Each of India’s 13 major river basins—making up 80 percent of the total surface area and home to nearly 85 percent of the population—is so polluted that bacteria feeding on the water are the only things that have proliferated, river water laced with industrial toxins is irrigating farmland and urban aquifers are now filling with sewage.
The Ganga Yamuna Jal Pradushan Nivaran Pradarshani is a research extension and environmental awareness programme to "create large scale awareness and knowledge generation" about prevention, conservation and management of river Ganga. The exhibition enlightened the people about the significance of Ganga and effects of pollution to the Living & non-living community.
The Ganga Exhibition is being organised under the banner of U. P. Research Association, University of Allahabad, Allahabad founded by Dr. D. N. Shukla, Professor and Head, Department of Botany, University of Allahabad, Allahabad since 1981 to date (last 33 years) on the bank of River Ganga near Sangam at Prayag (Allahabad).
It is first environmental awareness programme (since 1981 to date) which emphasis problems of Ganga and motivate local people to save pious status of river Ganga. It is one of the largest environmental awareness programme in all over the world, run for last 33 years for three long months continuously in world’s largest fair Kumbha/Ardh Kumbh/Magh Mela in India. More than 30 crore people have visited the exhibition for the last 33 years from India and abroad.

Pollution can be significantly reduced or eliminated by technological progress, but degraded water and nutrients circulation and disturbed energy flow at the catchments scale create complex problems. Thus, the twenty-first century will become an era of integrative science, because understanding the complexity of our world is key to achieving sustainable development. This is particularly necessary in ecology and environmental sciences, for two reasons. First, there is an urgent need for sound solutions toward declining ecosystem services and biodiversity at the global scale. Second, further scientific progress can be made by testing existing concepts and "know-how", and by implementing concepts and methods integrated at the large scale of basin landscapes. To "create large scale awareness and knowledge generation" about prevention, protection and management of river Ganga water quality. And therefore, motivating and educating the people regarding reservoirs and prevention of Gang pollution is also required. and promote linkages arising out of interactions between people and water resources in general and Ganga in particular on a sustained basis through research and extension work.
